The way I understood it was that you get both, a code to enter to download the Pokemon in game and also a sample pack of trading cards.
Get Electabuzz or Magmar!

I can confirm that you do actually get both.
You need to go to the till in Game store and they'll print a code out for you. The trading cards are just a starter pack containing 2 cards and a leaflet listing all the ones available.
My cards were Pikachu and Sandile.

Do you get a code for both pokemon too, or just the one?

Just one code and it will give you either Electabuzz on Y or Magmar on X. The code will not work a second time on the other game either, I tried!

Do you just go to the till and ask for it? or do I have to show I have the game? I'll be in town tomorrow so might pop in to game.

I just went to the till and asked for it. They punched a few buttons on it and printed the code on receipt paper.

The game is the same except a few pokemon! and there evolution's!

I would look at the cover Pokémon and pick that way.
I like Yveltal so went for Y
