When most people have a 1080p TV what' the real point?

I can't say a new 4k TV or console appeals to me unless they're cheap.

I have't seen any mention of 4k gaming on the rumoured PS4K.

I think it will be able to stream 4k content as well as play 4k blu-rays.

I assume that the key point of this is to:
a) Boost performance for VR - perhaps the PS 4.5 will be sold as part of a VR bundle
b) Provide support for 4k/HDR blurays and 4k/HDR streaming - the PS3 provided a massive boost to Bluray in its battle with HD-DVD. The first 4k players that have been released are very expensive - Panasonic at £600 and Samsung at £430. If the PS4.5 is around £400 then it I would buy it for its 4k bluray playing ability alone - and may get a few games as well.

I doubt that the extra performance will mean that 4k games can be run at decent frame rates.

Have to say, if Sony come out and say that the better Playstation VR experience
will be with the PS4K then that will be enough for me to cancel my PSVR pre-order.

me too - I might cancel my pre-order and wait to see if there's a performance difference.

This doesn't look like a wise move from Sony IMO.

Considering the tflops difference it'd be a safe bet that PSVR will be potentially improved with a higher framerate.

Any games that are going for 60fps could be turned to native 120fps on PS4k.

Finally someone who gets it.

When i read the constant stream of hyperbole on the Internet (hi gaff!) and podcasts like ps i love you (hi colin moriarty!), i feel like either the world or myself has gone completely insane.

This!

The #1 thing with the ps4k is the fact that at its time of release it will almost certainly be the cheapest way to play 4k blu rays.

Why is this fact completely lost on everyone?

It's not lost on me. I will buy the PS4K if the rumours are true. It will be purely for 4K UHD Blu-rays. I am likely to never buy a game for it.

I don't give a rats about 4K video, I'm just as happy watching a dvd as a blurray. But if this new machine can get me some stable framerates I'm all in, doesn't half get annoying wandering the wasteland in Fallout with it micro stuttering every few minutes.
