Lovely story. I'm welling up slightly at that.

I treasure the Bero book she bought me along with the potato peeler I got the same year. It was the same as the one she had and I used to comment on how good it was when she used to get me peeling when we visited at weekends. It's daft how something so silly and cheap can mean so much.

This is the power of GC and the good people who inhabit it. I wonder if Stuart expected this 15-odd years ago?

Corned beef and potato pie

"Broth" always for new years day,  like a soup or stew, carrots, leeks, potatoes, parsnip (probably some other root veg), pearl barley, water (too poor for stock), with a joint of either neck of lamb or shin of beef cooked in the broth. Served on top of mashed potatoes. Lasted a large family days.   Drives my wife mad when I suggest having it (it's the serving on mashed potatoes that she can't get), never been able to get it to taste quite the same

It's not the most appetising to look at but taste is superb. Will try and write down the recipe later if I have time, very easy. Everyone in the area seems to have a different recipe though
