I'm not a fan of those electric sharpeners at all, my mrs bought one and frankly I was a bit grumpy about it I like a steel as you have a much better feeling for what you're doing, the electric ones can easily scuff the sides of your knife.

Besides a steel is way cooler, understated and perfectly designed for the job, I'm generally not a fan of anything over engineered unless it is it has good novelty value. I'm the same wi silly bottle openers a section middle aged blokes seem to get very proud of.

Sommerliers and chefs know what to use!

The ceramic steels are good, everyday steels can damage some blades

These are actually pretty good and fairly foolproof for interim sharpening

Nice way of helping to drive a small shop out of business or increase prices in larger companies!
Why can't people accept that if you want the benefit of seeing/touching/listening to/trying a product you should be prepared to pay for it?  If you're sure from a review that you know just what you want, or a straight replacement item, then great, take the benefit of internet pricing.  If you want service and go to a bricks and mortar location then accept the price.

In fairness testing a knife can be pretty essential to anyone who wants to use them properly, everyone has different feels for weight, globals were the best feel for me. If knew of a smaller local dealer who could have allowed me to test I would happily have gone. However there were none, therefore my options were more limited

Global is the way to go - I only ever use the chef's knife and the small tomato knife. I'd like a full set but it would be a waste as I'd hardly ever use them

I can also vouch for Robert Welch, really good quality and stay sharp for ages. If they're a bit pricey I can also highly recommend the ProCook Professionals range of German made knives.

Go German!  I use Wusthof Classic Ikon and they're great.  Just the right feel and weight.  Like others, I don't like the feel in the hand of Global knives.  Mine were expensive but the Classic range is cheaper and just as good.

yep that's a proper one!! The eBay description made me laugh- is it a chefs knife, is it a vegetable knife or is it a carving knife?? It can't be all three
