Well, here in France at the moment, we have cold weather to the left of us, hot weather to the right and in the middle.......

Vouvray crops damaged by hail storm

Some Vouvray producers have lost everything this year, all Vouvray producers have lost something.  Hail the size of golf balls, cars totally wrecked.

Meanwhile in Paris yesterday the heavens opened and the Eiffel Tower disappeared from view, even to those standing underneath it, due to the intensity of the storm.

Biarritz (SW France, near Spain) is shivering with a cool 17C while Strasbourg (NE France, German border is sweltering in a predicted 37C which may or may not go on to produce a record or two).

The whole spring/summer so far seems to have been one where its all twisted about.  Moscow and Scandinavia have been, several times, warmer than France and Spain, as the hot weather by-passes western Europe and tracks up through eastern Europe and across the top, so to speak.

All very strange.

No miracles at Lourdes!

The river which passes through Lourdes, le Gave de Pau, reached its highest level recorded.  The grotto was flooded to 1.40M.  The river is fed from the Pyrenees, which have had huge amounts of rain over the last couple of days.  In itself that wasn't too unusual.  But add to that there was still a lot of snow(they were skiing in the Pyrenees at the beginning of June) which was unusual. Add to that that the ground is already saturated.   So, the snow has been  melted by the rain, none of the water can be absorbed by the ground and this is what happened.
(I think the film shows the river before its peak, I'll check)

And this weekend they are expecting the temperature in Death Valley to equal the century old record of 54C.  According to radio 2 news.

Yesterday Adrar in Algeria clocked up 48C and "Univ. Wi Id 8918 "  noted a cool -62C, so 110C difference.

I could do with a bit of the cool here (but not that much!)  34C in the shade and out in it all day, working hard, comme d'hab

I should have mentioned, the reason for noting the above!   As we are expecting climate change and more extremes of weather, I figured one way to monitor this may be to note how often we get real extremes of temperature on the same day.  So, I have set the arbitary extreme, for my purposes as 110C.  So, I shall try and note every difference of 110C and above and see if the frequency increases.

Looks likely we are going to go from the coldest spring to the warmest July (or even summer if it lasts)

So much for the 10 year cycle of wet summers we could be in according to the met office - I can see a hosepipe ban before long at this rate...  (to be fair they did say that not every summer in the cycle will be wet. but clearly they have no ability to forecast it)

BBC News - Climate extremes are 'unprecedented'

Interesting.

BBC News - Arctic methane 'time bomb' could have huge economic costs

(I have put that link in because it relates to a post in this thread.  If you want to discuss it, start another thread, please. )

OK, stating the bleedin' obvious here.  More warm weather records over the last few days than you can wave a stick at.

Suffice to say that France has broken warm October records like there is no tomorrow and Perpignan had a low of 22C last night.

And of course this all comes with interesting weather as the cold air from "up North" desperately tries to get where it wants to go.  ^ weeks worth of rain in Ardeche last night and tornadoes in Nord and Pas de Calais (as well as the South coast of Blighty)

Still, its good for the heating bills.

Yet to put the central heating on here in Northampton, current temperature 20 deg C in the house.

Bit different from this time last year, from what I remember the temperature was hitting 11 deg below. Brrrr.
