No, he means the sensor
You don't need a smart meter to get a display of your usage, earlier versions of these things have a little gadget that fits around the supply feed at the meter, that talks to the display bit and off you go. See How to Save Money With an Electricity Usage Monitor
The supply of a usage monitor with a smart meter is there purely to persuade you to fit a smart meter, so they can get your data. The original point of smart meters was forced by government, they did have a commitment date to get everyone changed over, but I believe they've relented on that date, because it just isn't going to happen.
The point someone write above that not all smart meters are compatible with all providers was meant to be fixed, so you could easily move between suppliers - not sure if it actually happened.
Meantime the energy companies will end up using the data the meters provide and I'm pretty sure it isn't going to be in our interests. They could move peak time to when you happen to use electricity most (evenings for example).
I understand that at least some meters provide the capability to be managed (i.e. turned off/on) remotely, although the functionality isn't meant to be implemented, it is in the specification. |
