"Questioning" that would have been a new one for SVE

Looks to be further realisation of the lack of social care funding as Surrey Council look to raise Council Tax by 15% to care for the most vulnerable in Surrey.

Council to put 15% tax hike to referendum

I'm predicting that this vote won't be a close run thing!

I suspect a resounding no.  Unfortunately.

Strategy is lacking. IMO they should increase the council tax by 5%, followed by a further 5% the year after. Then stand back and see if there is a public outcry or not.

If not, then increase again by about 2%. In other words spread the increase over four years or so.

I think the strategy is more to say 'this is your fault' when they cut funding after the referendum reaches it's obvious conclusion.

They must be aware this is unlikely to go through.

So Mays current manifesto finally recognises the social care cost and implement her 'dementia tax' or my own, Social Care Inheritance Death Tax.  Apparently ditching insurance scheme favoured by herself and other countries on the advice of insurance companies, getting not so tough with the free markets.

You mean like the Bedroom tax?

You know what happens in practice? As of today, if your parent(s) need care or have to go into a home the costs are enormous. So it means you might have to sell their house to pay for the care. Imagine if its only one parent that needs care and the other is still in the house?
Equity release?

Mrs May is looking at a way to defer these costs, that's all. At least she is addressing the problem which is going to effect most of us.
Or maybe you are happy with the way things are at the moment?

I think this is certainly one part of the manifesto they've got spot on. A brave move, but the right one.

A granny with £10k savings living in an £80k flat is going to be protected now, whereas the granny with 50k savings living in a £400k home will not.

I know it's slightly more complicated than that, but on principle I've got no issue with this approach.

We're living longer and costing more as we do, the reality is it's either this approach that's needed going forwards or 'Logan's run', I know which I'd be voting for.
