Yes, but if you read almost every article written about the reasons for bringing in the Act, one cited is that it would prevent snap elections being called for political gain. Which is what the PM has done today.
Example from the FT online:
Then in 2011, as part of the coalition government’s programme, a Fixed-term Parliaments Act was passed. The intention was to take the politics out of the dissolution of parliament. There would no longer be the risk of a snap general election.
And from The New Statesman:
During his premiership, Cameron specifically introduced measures to prevent governments from tactically calling elections, and instead legislated for a five-year fixed-term parliament, which would make the next general election 2020. |
