Cultural identity isn't why I want England to be independent. Although some very interesting points have been made, and I've enjoyed reading the thread.

I want it for self interest and because I think England will be more prosperous alone. And because I want a government focused on pursuing English interests and not trying to pacify nationalists in Scotland or Ireland.

Try living in some other countries and the benefits of English culture and values become rather more attractive.

Perhaps you dont see it because you live surrounded by it all the time?

I think that is the crux of the matter. When I read some posters saying Err wot is English culture?  Its like they have not seen it because it is all around them.

Or by Mexico...The world's first patent for a color TV was granted to a young Mexican inventor.

Guillermo González Camarena was just 23 years old in 1940 when he submitted his application in Mexico for a US Patent. He was granted Patent No. 2,296,019 protecting his development of an "improved chromoscopic adapter" using the "Trichromatic" system for color television transmissions.

The method is sometimes referred to as a "field sequential" system.
I leant that just 3 days ago!

A decent IMO article (heavy on the Brexit) regarding the conflation of British and English nationalism loosening and the vacuum that has ensued

But staying in the EU is no guarantee that the Union will survive. Scotland and NI have become closer to independence throughout the time of our EU membership so the Union has already weakened.

But the article was from the FT so what do we expect.

Not decent at all.

I don't know anyone who harks back to the days of empire. Most of my friends know very little about it at all, let alone want to recreate it.

How would that work anyway? I'm not quite sure how we end up ruling say Egypt again. And that would be relatively simple compared to conquering and ruling the likes of India.

Might it mean the end of the UK? I live in hope.

1. English Nationalism only rose after Scotland's. See Post 32.
2. It was Scotland who wanted a union with England in the first place after a disastrous attempt to set up their own Empire.
3. We had a British Empire, not an English Empire.
4. You keep posting about Scottish Nationalism.
5. Why should I fear the break up of the UK? All we would need to do was have Remainers kick up a fuss, call for another referendum so everyone then votes the right way, and at most there will be a partial break-up only for another generation to vote for a return again. So why should anyone be bothered about the UK breaking up any more?

Again you're displaying the cognitive recoil of not my experience to write off a theory

If there isn't this demographic in the country (as you appear to be suggesting) then why does the top two selling daily newspapers wrap themselves in Empire 2.0 rhetoric?

Your 2nd point is just flippancy

1) Cookie cutter analysis
2) Gross over simplification (see link below), The English Parliament put a block on English investors in Darian, the bankrupted nobles wanted a Union for monetary reasons only, the vast majority of the population didn't want a Union (there where several riots after 1707)
BBC - History -                  British History in depth: The Darien Venture
3) The whole point of the piece was that Britishness constrained English nationalism to a large extent (Devolution and now Brexit has loosened this)
4) Despite being incorrect (and responding to previous posts/flow) how does that make you feel? As it appears to be important enough for you to comment
5) The quoted FT piece was a general point not aimed at you specifically
