First of all, good on JRM if he did break 100. Most of us have done it. No big deal.

Second, drugs, politicians. Meh. Who gives a flying fudge.

Do the media really think its headline news. Do the general population really give 2 hoots about this.

Oh yeah I don't disagree, he should be crucified for that. It looks like he may be about to pay the price too. Good news for Boris this.

But in terms of the actual drug taking, a bit of coke here and there when you're younger doesn't disqualify you from doing a good job of something when you're older.

The media will spend the next week trying to convince us otherwise of course.

I guess this also rules me out for the PM job.

I’m quite liberal, but always drew the line at (should that be before?) hard drugs.

Granted having done it in the past whilst not in the job isn’t the same as doing it now on the job. However hard drugs are hard drugs. It’s a line not to be crossed ever.

I’d agree, yet sadly our media seem to be actively supporting/celebrating the line of potential Prime Ministers recounting their various experiences of dabbling with class A drugs, without worrying about being prosecuted for it.

Hard drugs include nicotine and alcohol by technical definition, that being any nervous system effecting substance that can lead to physical addition. Soft drugs are those nervous system effecting substances that are not considered to be physically addictive.
However the general use the terms hard or soft with regards to nervous system effecting substances is ambiguous and subjective.

What people categorise as soft or hard drugs varies, so it's not really a great term to use - although I think I understand what your are implying - i.e the likes of Heroin of cocaine, it could be that your list differs from mine or someone else's regarding others.
