As much as the liberal left hate this, you have to say that's pretty accurate. If the mainstream political parties all sing from the same Politically Correct Hymn Sheet, then it's inevitable that some people will be forced to the extremes.
We saw a less extreme model of this in action in respect to the EU; all 3 mainstream parties in complete agreement that the EU was wonderful. Except that a majority of the population didn't agree, so who could they vote for? Hence UKIP was born (nowhere near as far right as Britain First, before anyone wants to jump in with a deliberate misunderstanding of the analogy),
The popularity and growth pf UKIP forced the EU loving Tory Party to offer a referendum, something that everyone agrees would not have happened if UKIP had not existed.
We have also seen similiar cause and effect with AfD in Germany, with all the mainstream parties being pro immigration.
Britain First is a tiny organisation, with zero elected representation in the country. Interesting though, they apparently have 1.9 Million followers on Facebook, which is more followers than the Conservatives and Labour combined. |
