You really don't have to. Things have moved forward fairly quickly in Japan in the last year or two - in my opinion partly because of the popularity of apple pay Suica (bit like Oyster card in London, but used for everything), and partly because of the upcoming olympics.
Sure, there are still places in Japan that won't accept foreign cards, so it's always a good idea to carry at least some cash with you (from the 7-11s mentioned earlier for example!) but VISA and mastercard are pretty widely accepted now.
Also if it helps anyone, Halifax Clarity card is absolutely brilliant for travel, as there are no fees at all, and the exchange rate is pretty much at BoE level. |
