I think what he means is, if you see him coming, you could wait 30 seconds and let him go through before pressing the button, whereas it seems to him you are pressing it vindictively to make him have to stop.  Try one morning: acknowledging his presence,  "not" pressing the button and giving him a cheery wave through, I'd bet you get a different response.

However, you may be right

I’d do it purpose just to wind the idiot up. Tell him to leave home earlier.

In my book it's only vindictive if you press the button with no intention of crossing. He's never said can you wait for him to go by, he also has never had to stop just slow down. Besides if I have to wait for approaching traffic to go by before I press the button, there's not point in using the crossing.

All I'm suggesting is that he may have gained the impression you are are doing it deliberately to annoy him, not that you are.  The crossing is there to allow you to cross safely, not necessarily to give you priority.  So judging when to press the button, so as to disrupt traffic flow as little as possible, helps everyone.

To be honest I'm at a point past caring what he thinks. Also you seem to be suggesting road vehicles have priority at all times. I was taught there is equal priority for all road users, especially in built up areas.

Chill out man   As a pedestrian, I look up the road and think: "Will I massively inconvenience 28 road users by pressing the button so one person can cross, or do I wait until it inconveniences no-one"

Obviously, in back to back traffic you press the button when you get there. But you shot yourself in the foot when you said there was hardly any traffic.  How come you always seem to press the button on this cyclist?
