Why ?
Can never understand this, every time you go out in your car hundreds if not thousands of people see your registration plate and it is captured on camera by all sorts of CCTV be it shops, council anpr or whatever.

Don’t bad people scour social media group pages and then use the info to clone registration plates and then nick identical vehicles?

Taken from another page...

‘Number plates can also be obscured in order to combat the crime of cloning a particular car.

For example - Red Ford Mondeo shown on screen, number plate visible. Number plate is then copied, attached to similar red Ford Mondeo which can then be driven through traffic cameras, Congestion Charge zones, parked illegally etc with corresponding offences being recorded against the registered keeper of the original Mondeo.

The question is - why can I clone a car from a photo on avforums but not from looking out the window at a car?

You can do both if you wish, they’d both work. So as an experiment think of any car, model and colour that you’d like to replicate the plates on and look out of your window waiting for one to go past, and hopefully make a note of the reg.

Or go on to FB car group page and save yourself a lot of time.

OK so the theory is people collect photos of cars and then build a searchable list by make and model on some social media site visited by cloners?

Or just go to autotrader or Ebay and they give you a nice search tool as well so you can match the exact colour engine and spec

I’m definitely in the camp of that there is no point whatsoever in doing that.

You guys are right, the theory is flawed in that looking out the window yields quicker results than looking online
