Speedos may read high by up to 10%, but are not permitted to read low.

So if you think about it, your speedo could read 90MPH and a camera set with a 10%   2MPH threshold wouldn't trigger.

Track days have their place, but driving to a destination AND having fun at the same time is what driving is about, for me. The powers that shouldn't be won't increase the speed limit because, in their opinion the thinking time is the same. And they'll get less fines (voluntary taxes) so that won't ever happen. One of the reasons for demonizing diesels is to push everyone electric, but this means they are losing tax on the diesel and road tax. So guess where the shortfall will come from. . . fines will be a thing of the past when its all autonomous. Got knows what will happen then.

yep, the whole "go live at midnight tonight" thing has been doing the rounds for ages. There's a bunch of these on my stretch of the M25 and I've seen them flash when the speed restriction signs are illuminated as well as when they're not; seen them flash people when the signs are set to 20, 40, and also when it's non-illuminated national speed limit. Like someone else said, I don't trust any camera on the M25 (or M1) so I don't chance it.

I regularly set the M25 cameras off at work, especially around Cobham services and further on towards Heathrow. They've been working for quite a while (as are the M3 cameras)
I don't know what they are set at, but they flash a lot! At night the Cobham services are very active!

Of anyone can do more than 40mph at any time on the M25, please can you share your secret with me? Was it on Christmas Day?

I recently attended a speed awareness motorway safety course after being flashed 74 on the M25 whilst 60mph limit was flashing on the gantry sign.

The course was very educational and we were made aware that all smart motorways are now live with cameras. If it’s flashing 40 you need to do 40 if it’s flashing 60 you need to do 60.

This is all to do with traffic flow and keeping the motorway moving. The speeds are governed by the radar cameras at the side of the road checking how close together the traffic is tailgating and reduces the speed on the motorway accordingly for safety reasons. Lane closures etc will reduce the speed on the motorway.

Peoples driving styles affect the speed of the motorway. Ultimately there is more traffic on the road and we seem to have an increase in idiot drivers.

My experience over many decades of driving has been that if you stay within the posted limit x 1.1, you won't get flashed (or nabbed by a camera in a van).  That doesn't mean it absolutely can't/won't happen but, as general rule of thumb, that's a safe maxim to follow.

I too have seen a flash on the M42 when nobody appeared to be speeding which I surmise is an automated action to remind people that the cameras are on.

I know that the speedo on my car is 100% accurate, at least at speeds below 40, because whenever I pass one of those speed readers, mine always matches exactly the displayed read out on the sign.  Either that or they're both mis-calibrated to exactly the same degree (which I doubt).
