Mine actually stayed the same this year, or thereabouts. Which is good considering my car is modified, i have points, i have accidents and numerous claims for windscreens.

Nonono you are doing that wrong

Use the normal comparison sites to find your cheapest. Then look at quidco for the cashback on offer, and then go direct to the insurer That’s how I ended up with my Mercedes AMG for just £314 with Hastings Direct

I had a chip this summer - Autoglass (IIRC) and a £10 excess.

I'm generally not worried about the claim process which is why I went with a cheap quote.  I haven't had to deal with a claim of any type for 17 years - that was with Direct Line and was also a bad joke.

I'm really hacked off that I bumped my partner's car as it was a silly accident that I should have avoided but neither I nor the van in front anticipated someone braking hard rather than joining an empty roundabout
So far Aviva's claim process has been very good.  Online report, uploaded some photos, car seen within 4 days, repair authorised and it's in the shop less than a week after the accident.  Hopefully the rest will be as smooth and we can close it off without any stress.

I've been with admiral 4 years now. They always try it on every year and put my renewal  up then I ring them and they drop it.

Admiral wanted 700 this year. I checked go compare, cheapest I could get was 600. Phoned admiral told them I can get it for 500, they matched the 500 serves them right for trying it on

All insurance premiums are on the rise due to the rise in car thefts

I recently had to accept my renewal offer because everywhere else wanted at least £200 more, I’m 38 and it’s now £500 a year for a 2015 Passat GT fully comp!

Nope gone down every single year. Was £380 last year with protected no claims. Just done this years and it’s down to £327 with protected no claims

Oh and £50 on top of that cashback with quidico.

Just read comments about Red Star above.  About 12 years ago, I had a claim after my car was broken into and the thieving gits caused damage to the seat, door, wing mirror and dashboard in addition to the window.  That's before you take into account what actually got nicked.  Red Star (again through Adrian Flux) were utterly useless and I was severely out of pocket.  You get what you pay for when it comes to insurance so the price comparison sites aren't realistic in my opinion as all they compare is the price, not the cover.

I recently went through the rigmarole of getting car insurance and found that the prices that came up on the price comparison sites were often not valid when I actually looked a couple of days later.  I couldn't insure the car straight away as I was waiting on the dealership sorting out my private plate etc.  In the end, I went with Aviva Private Clients and the cover offers three years return to invoice so no need for Gap and although it offered far better cover than any of the standard insurers on the likes of gocompare, comparethemarket etc. the price was very competitive.

I would therefore try a specialist rather than just picking the cheapest price that comes up on the internet.  If you ever have to make a claim, you soon realise why these policies are cheap.

Out of interest why wasn’t the break in covered? Seems a rather elementary point of insurance? Might be useful to exapand on for others so they can look at the key facts before hitting that buy button

It was covered but I was out of pocket.  They told me I had to use their car audio supplier who offered me a bottom-of-the-range headunit for roughly the same price as a decent one, which was no-where near as good as the one that was taken.  I think the car audio cover was 200 quid and they wanted about 600quid for the unit I had nicked (bought for around 300) and then charge me for installation.  I had to jump through hoops and the whole process took months and I eventually threatened them with the insurance ombudsmen and eventually got agreement to let me source my own headunit and refund the money.  I also had a sat nav unit taken from under the seat (my mistake) which I didn't get replaced, damaged wiring, not to mention all the belongings that were in the boot.  I think they gave me 50 quid for the belongings.  They insisted I use their repair facility which was about 2 hours from my home in the middle of nowhere.  I refused and insisted on a local place as I had a full respray done in a non-standard colour which again dragged the whole process out.  You don't have to use their repairer and if you do, you'll forgo a courtesy car but they were adamant.  I did the repair on the seat myself and I had to live with the gouge mark in the dash which was a constant reminder of the break-in until I got rid of the car.  I chose Adrian Flux as I assumed they were mod friendly, which wasn't the case.  Adrian Flux aren't the actual insurers which is a mistake a lot of people make, they're just brokers.

Basically, read the small print and meticulously check out the actual cover.  Most insurers on the price comparison sites offer terrible cover and you can do a lot better but these days people seem to be too lazy and take the easy option i.e. the cheapest.  I hate renewing insurance but from now on, I think I'll skip the price comparison sites.
