If the key is on the paperwork and included in the final price is there any reason to think they won't refund you the full price?

I read that the extra key would "cost" £180 and the dealer fund £90 of that and expect the OP to stump up £90 over the agreed vehicle price.
If the OP returns both keys with the vehicle, the dealer will have two keys for the next purchaser so surely he can then price the car £90 higher?
If not he's charged the OP £90 more than the car was worth with one key.

Bit stingy of the dealer to argue about the key when it doesn't sound like they are arguing about returning the car. Sounds a bit like left/right arm not knowing what they are doing. It wouldn't surprise me if it comes down to how they are organised and whose budget is paying for what.

Eitherway you shouldn't be out of pocket, when returning for a full refund. Quick question to clarify;
1. Was the car bought on finance?
2. Was the key bought in a separate financial transaction from the dealers parts/service team?

I would  get it confirmed that the vehicle is rejected and a refund will be processed. Then when they don't refund the key amount pursue that after. Get the big picture sorted first.

You're paying for half the key.

Then you're entitled to half the key, just make sure the half you get makes the half they get utterly useless.

First and foremost - I'd be amazed if the dealer is will to just take the car back and refund you.

Has this been confirmed yet? Just cause they say they have a 14 day money back guarantee - doesn't always mean it's quite as simple as that.

Normally they must be given a chance to fix/repair it before just coughing up a refund.

I would get that part of the situation sorted and in writing from them first before worrying about halving the price of the key

Well half of one key of the two that exist at the moment that work with the car

As others have pointed out concentrate on getting the car returned and the dealer agreeing the refund for that. When that is agreed discuss the half cost you put into the second key.

If they won’t refund your half for the second key I think I would walk away and put it down to life. Even if you say you’ll keep the key, they will just recode the other one and do the same deal with the next person that buys it for a second key. Your kept key will be useless tk olen or drive the car. Tou have no bargaining power and the main thing is the thousands (presumably) for the car.

Managed to get this resolved with the dealer who was happy to swap the car for another of the same model which had luckily just arrived, it’s a year younger with slightly lower mileage. All good for now and seems a better car altogether. Thanks for all the input and advice guys. Much appreciated.

Yeah thanks, I’m very happy to say that I was feeling very anxious about the whole thing. I think luck landed with the other car otherwise it might not have been such smooth sailing.
