Being a Tyler Perry fan already, I was more than a little excited for this film. But skipping to the point...
This film was brilliant. It was captivating, emotional, gritty, serious, funny, warm, suspenseful, and shocking all at the same time. The actresses were phenomenal; I can't even choose a favorite at this point. And the poetry entwined into the dialogue was masterful and artistic. Any person of intelligence could understand what was being conveyed to them and only the weak and closed minded will not be able to take any meaning from a film such as this.
And the people who accredit this film with "male-bashing," obviously do not live on planet earth, where events such as those depicted in this film happen on a daily basis. Just because someone is taking the initiative to point out such things and frown upon them, does not mean they are discrediting the entire black male race--because as I remember Kelly's (Kerry Washington) husband was quite supportive of her.
Any woman of color who hasn't been "whitewashed" (not meant to be offensive; for lack of a better term) or thoroughly unexposed to adversity because of their color most likely will not get this film. They would most likely be the ones who are more relative to Jo (Janet Jackson) in their opinions. But having lived both lives and having been around so many different types of people I can understand where each one of these women, including Jo, is coming from--Yes, me and my 20 year old black female self has experienced and is still experiencing adversity because of my color. It is not the racism, but the after burn of racism (for the most part) that is the force behind the misfortune of us as a people. The scars are indescribably deep.
This is a powerful film, in my opinion. It would be unfortunate for one not to have seen it on the big screen. But whether you interpret the meaning behind the words of the women in this film, or whether you just brush it off as "pretentious" because Tyler Perry is coming into Hollywood as a force to be reckoned with (which is a fact, not an opinion), is entirely up to you.
