If anyone wishes to know how one should not make a TV series from a classic novel, watch 'A Suitable Boy'.
There isn't even the faintest hint of honesty, authenticity or intent to this adaptation. In fact Mira Nair and team have been lazy and brash. There isn't even a hint of a screenplay. The casting is downright shoddy. The performances, save a few are embarassing; amateur, college actors would have done a better job. Case in point - Manoj Pahwa, Bugs Bhargava, Lata's mother and Vivaan Shah ham their way through in every single scene. Even Ishan Khatter and the reliable Tabu are laughable in many scenes. The direction is the worst I've seen in a long, long time. Mira Nair has either sleep-walked through this film or delegated the task to some ADs.
This is NOT how India looked in the 1950s. This is NOT how Indians speak. Hindus DO NOT hate Muslims. Maharaja's DO NOT behave like buffons as has been portrayed. Women DO NOT kiss men in public, least of all in temples in India as has been shown without others batting an eyelid even today, leave alone in 1950s India!
I could go on...but won't. What hurts most is that Mira Nair murdered a classic under the guise of artistic film making. Wonder what the BBC was doing?
