When I was 5 I saw Toonami, I thought it was great with all these shiny shows fighting from Japan and America. I saw DBZ, Thundercats, Heman, and Sailor moon and they where great! Relatable characters and such. There was one show called Gundam Wing which started Gundam as a franchise in the west but with only success going toward the nerdiest of nerds. Gundam wing filled my heart with dread and sadness as it spoke of world topics and so much so I skipped for all else.
STORY
Gundam Wing takes place in the future where everyone is fighting and there is no more peace. The skies are filled with death as colonies are in giant mobile suit wars with different nations such as Oz and Earth Sphere Allience. They fight and fight and only 5 boys and one girl must stop the war through the power of the White mechas called Gundams. But the story is so confusing and full of teen angst that you'll never follow what's happening unless you look real closely as the Wing fighters keep changing fractions.
CHARACTERS
Heero Yuuy- Heero is a detached young Mobile suit talent who is cold as ice. He's incredibly focused and mysterious. Born an orphan and must fight in the war. He does become loving later.
Duo Maxwell- He's comic relief and the cheeriest member of the Gundam squad.
Trowa Barton- A professional tight rope walker who performs at a circus and has a clown mecha. He is humble and noble.
Quatre Rabena Winner- The youngest of the terrorist group. He pilots a Gundam Sandroc that with dual weilding swords. He is blond and saddened by everything.
Chang Wufei- Chang is a chinese descent Mobile Suit Pilot who pilot's Shenlong Gundam. He practices many of Kung Fu.
All of these boys together no matter what the cause cannot stand war.
We have the scientists who are all weird and funny looking but concoct the greatest of mobile suits and create the greatest of soldiers.
Relena- Who is a young royalty girl just wants peace in the world. But this doesn't always go as well as having a one world government would be tough.
Zechs Marquise- General of Oz's military.
Treize Kushreneda- Leader of Oz
There are so many characters I'm not going to go through them all. However n this story you will see good nor evil. Just 2 sides of the same coin wanting supremacy
It all harkens back to the old quote from the Art of War. All is fair in love in war. It's all yin yang eastern philosophy.
ANIMATION AND ART
The animation in Gundam Wing is very low budget. There are many recycled frames to compensate for the lack of overall animation direction in the first 25 episodes. Though the character designs hold up as Shuko Murase's talent never fails to impress me and continues to go on. The backgrounds aren't very good. They are very oily, and smudgy, and it just feels outdated. It feels like Dragonball Z or any mid 80s anime nonsense. However the mechs are still good. I think you will like the general look of Gundam Wing.
The Gundam fights themselves aren't terribly exciting as they are not tense against the average Leo's or otherwise overpowered mechs such as Talgeese which has been greatly out matched anyway but way too flashy to be real as real robot can get.
SOUND
The soundtrack of Gundam Wing is full of orchestra and metal guitar wails to get to today's teenz. However the only teens you are gonna get with this Anime is teenage girls. These boys are angsty as heck. However Brad Swale from 0079 voices Quatre and there are plenty of funny moments like Heero threatening Relena to kill her. Haha! "I'll kill you."
OVERALL
The execution of this story is just shallow as a DC comic. I don't think the characters are very human. They are as human as their voice actors and limitations of Sunrise's budget or your imagination. If you want true quality watch the EW OVA or anything UC in order.
