Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam came out after Gundam in the 1979 gained so much popularity. It did what Gundam did but even better! If Gundam wasn't cancelled because of the September 11th attacks. This show would have been on air in way earlier than 2004. But no, Gundam is an obscurity in the United States
Zeta Gundam continues the plot of Mobile Suit Gundam years after the one year war. The story is about a boy named Kamille Bidan. A young boy who wanted to see Bright Noa but instead came across the Titans and stole the black Gundam. He now joined the fleet of the Argama that Noa and other Gundam fodder have joined INCLUDING but not limited to Bright Noa. They go on a journey to stop the evil Titans who will bring back Zeon. Headed by Mineva and Haman Kahn along with Jared Mesa and others. Kamille brings the whole crew of with Amuro Ray.
Lt. Quatro who is secretly and quite obviously Char Aznable has proven to be good and wants to help. Charquatro wants to not be Char Aznable. He is afraid. He hides himself. But as soon as he tells the truth everyone accepts him. They know deep down in his heart he is a good man. A traitor of vengeful Zeon. Zeta Gundam has many of deaths. Deaths of children and deaths of Women. Zeta Gundam is real sad at times. You will feels drained. But hopeful. We all know war is bad no matter what.
Who is far more dark than anyone is the evil Paptimus Schirocco who grooms young women into cyber NuTypes as well as lovers. He's a real lady killer.
MECHA
Char pilots the Hyakushiki.
Kamile pilots the Zeta Gundam. A Transforming mech that no longer needs to have the necessity of combining of a jet.
ANIMATION
The animation of Zeta is typical of the era. First you get the god like well animated 2D animation that he show will never equate to second the season finally animation which gets way better. But overall. Zeta Gundam has many unique animations.
The mechs are detailed and animations are consistent. The mechs are really detailed.
The cinematography like the last Gundam is real good.
The art style is typical of the 80s. Big hair and big eyes. But honestly better than most anything you could have seen the 70's.
The backdrops are clean.
SOUND
The music in Zeta Gundam is fire! Every song in this anime is just plane timeless. Mobile Suits 3 is so intense. The intro music is a parody of Neil Sedaka. I listen to the entire soundtrack. It's real funky. It sounds like something out of a war movie or the theme song to NPR. I love it. Which is kinda weird since the show centers around anime teens. Some songs sound like Tron if you can dig that.
The dub isn't too shabby either. The muffled sfx give it a retrovibe.
OVERALL
Zeta Gundam is a really good anime. Even without knowing what happens in Gundam 0079 you will still enjoy it. It is better than Wing. It is great!
