"Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam" is probably one of the best anime series ever made and one of the best sequels up there with the likes of "The Empire Strikes Back" and "The Dark Knight". Everything about this series is great from its darker and more personal story to its characters that we can connect to and grow to like even if we may not like them at first.
The story takes place nearly a decade after the events of the original Gundam series. The Earth Federation has grown corrupt and in a twisted irony yesterdays heroes are now today's villains and yesterday's villains are now today's heroes fighting for freedom and independence. Enter teenage prodigy Kamille Bidan who like Amuro is thrust into war, ends up growing up the hard way and fights the Titans for the AEUG under the wing of former Zeon pilot Char Aznable himself now going under a different name. Other characters from the original series also show up in either minor or important roles. The story is very well written (with much more moral ambiguity especially from the Titian's who are even worse than Zeon) taking many twists and turns and leading to its infamous epic conclusion. The character development is very remarkable and subtle making you feel an emotional connection with characters on either side like in real guerrilla warfare despite the fact that the show is animated.
The animation for its time still looks great as the animation and art is much less clunky than the original gundam and has more depth especially with the robots but might still look dated to the modern anime viewer.
I highly recommend this to anyone who likes anime, Gundam or giant robots in general.
