Second jet crashes into the sea trying to land on Russian carrier

A Su-33 fighter jet, based on the aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, has crashed into the Mediterranean Sea after returning from a sortie over Syria.

This crash is the second loss of an aircraft from the Admiral Kuznetsov since it arrived off Syria last month after a Mig-29 crashed into the sea in November while attempting to land.

Russian carrier returning home from Syria due to inability to operate jets safely

It is understood that one of the reasons the Russian carrier Admiral Kuznetsoz is returning home from Syria is the vessels inability to safely operate aircraft.

Following the two incidents, the Kuznetsovs air wing was transferred to shore at Khmeimim Air Base near Latakia to continue military operations.

A carrier-cruiser that just ferries aircraft around and can't use them in operations isn't much of a carrier-cruiser.
