Oculus Rift S or Valve Index?
Hello guys!I need some help deciding which vr headset to buy. Sorry if a similar thread has been posted earlier.
So I’ve tried the Oculus Rift S and was immediately sold, I needed to get myself my own vr headset. After some research I have narrowed it down to either the Oculus Rift S or the Valve Index. The price for the Rift S in Sweden is about 500€, and the Index about 1100€.
The main reason I would like to get the Index over Rift S is the controllers. Sure the extra fov, resolution, refresh rate etc is also nice, but the main reason is the controllers.
I am a huge half life fan, and I will admit, the announcement of that game, with the Index controller support, makes me want to get them even more (boneworks also looks cool). I have heard a lot of games don’t support the index yet, but I believe many games will in the future and valve will definitely add support in all their titles.
I feel like if I don’t get the Index I will not feel satisfied with a Rift knowing I could have something better.
Although... is the Index worth the 600€ extra?Maybe I’m just hoping for a yes here to justify my purchase.
Sorry for the long post and thanks for taking the time to read it! I'm not sure it's €600 better, but if you can afford it, get the Index. If not, get the Rift. The price of VR hardware increases exponentially with the increase in quality unfortunately, as is the case with most tech these days. Thanks for the response!
I think i just might have to. Im waiting until the week is over and crossing my fingers that it will go on salt for black friday even though that is highly unlikly Is your gaming PC high enough spec for VR? It's only a price thing. If you can afford it, get the Index. If £900 is to rich for you, get the Rift S.
Access to the Oculus Store is a consideration but Revive makes that mostly moot. And sounds like the game you're most excited about is coming to Steam anyways. Yes! I just got myself a rtx 2070 to make sure I am data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 thanks for the consideration! You are right. I guess I know what I need to do. Thanks for the response data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 It depends on how you look at it. Yes, the Index controllers are better with all fingers being tracked but remains to be seen how useful tracking all of those fingers is going to be when it comes to developers.
Think about it. How often do you use your pinky and ring fingers? Most of the time you only use them to make a fist or grip something, and developers will ALWAYS develop for the lowest common denominator which means if a developer is going to be using finger tracking in their games they'll only track the index finger and the thumb, if they actually bother to track any fingers at all.
Like everyone else I'd say go for the Index if money isn't a problem but even if money ISN'T a problem you might want to consider that the money that you would save you can spend on buying an absolute sh*tLOAD of games. data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
It might also be worth getting an Oculus Quest instead of a Rift S or Index because with Oculus Link you can use the Quest to play both Quest games AND Rift S/Index games, and there are a good few Oculus Quest games that are cross buy, so you can buy a game from the Quest Store and download and play it from the Rift Store for no extra cost. And of course you can take it with you when you go on a coach, train or plane journey or take it on holiday.data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 There is more to the Index than just finger tracking. He said the main reason why he was considering getting the Index was because of the controllers, which is precisely why I mentioned the finger tracking in my post.
Like I've said, if money isn't a problem then I recommend that he gets an Index but even if he's completely loaded the fact that he can get a Rift S/Quest plus €600 worth of games for the same price as an Index plus Half Life: Alyx should be pointed out.
Personally I'd say that getting a Quest would probably be the best option.
