Help needed... HP 255 G6 FREEDOS

Hi. I have purchased this computer for my daughter and when it boots up it mentions install FreeDOS with drivers, it takes me to a blank screen and whatever I type comes up with bad input. I am baffled how do I install FreeDOS.

Can you boot from other media like USB and install Windows or whatever OS you want ?
(There are instructions here on how to get into bios/boot menu on G6).

FreeDOS is an open source clone of the old MS-DOS it sometimes comes pre-installed on old laptops and such so there is something on it. It's possible there is some remnant of that on the laptop.

When I select boot from usb it just goes back to the main page and install FreeDOS. So frustrating

Assuming you have a bootable USB stick with W10 on it then you should be able to do the following:

1. Insert a bootable USB stick into USB port

2. Turn PC on and repeatedly tap F10 key to enter BIOS

3. Select Boot tab in BIOS

4. Highlight your 1st boot device, you should set this as USB

5. Press F10 to save changes

6. Reboot the machine.

This should now boot to your USB stick and you can then install W10

If you don't have W10 a USB stick lets us know and we can guide you through making one using rufus

Rufus

Let us know how your getting on.

Check your USB stick in a different computer first and make sure it's working.

It'll save a whole load of head scratching if you establish up front whether your boot media is good or not!

Yes good point.

I think we've all done it!

The usb stick works but as soon as I click on usb drive on the laptop it just goes back to install FreeDOS.. how do I just get the laptop running? Aaahhhh

techquest Publish time 2-12-2019 03:09:40

Yes been there and done that and it so easy to get sidetracked when you have a problem in front you that is doing your head in.

So this happens from the setting of the BIOS? The BIOS set up as in my post above wouldn't need you to click anything, it should boot straight to the USB stick and start loading windows! Have you tried that?
