If you stream your iTune music via iPad for example you should be able to go settings-music-EQ and then pick one of the presets you like or prefer.

One way might to be change the surface the HP is sitting on. The bass vibrates the surface quite vigorously, especially a wooden table or shelf, so placing it on a mat/soft placemat/similar might dampen the bass a little, if you want that.

If you don’t pay for Apple Music will the HomePod still play music from my iTunes music library?

You can Airplay to it from iTunes, you'd loose a large chuck of its functionality though...I would suggest that if that is the interest then there are plenty of alternatives.

It may be a decent speaker at it's price point, though I doubt it can match my Sonos Playbar. However, the real issue I have with this product is it's getting you ever deeper into the Apple eco system which I see as a bad thing. In fact I'm thinking my iPhone 7 will be my last as Apple's pricing model has finally taken the shine of their products.
I note a few online reviews are already highlighting this issue - this is just one of those reviews. The HomePod is the point of no return for Apple fans

My Sonos Play:1 can do exactly that half the price (and then some). But it messes up artist names and the app seems to get less user-friendly with each update.
If the Play:1 gets AirPlay 2 (not confirmed yet) then I’ll accept the irritations and invest in another, possibly more, as I’ll be able to use the Music app, which does exactly what I want it to.
If not, then I’ll consider moving it on and getting a HomePod despite not being an Apple Music subscriber, despite losing services like TuneIn being there natively and despite the price, simply because it would do what I want it to better.

Is that currently the only way it works? The Echo will play Five Live for example if I ask along with anything on Tune In radio it would appear. Hopefully they will add this functionality in as it's 70% of my listening.
Audio books are another from audible. I love listening to them in the car on the way to work then asking to play the book on another device and it picks up from where I left it on the other device.
Really keen to get one of these, just don't want to lose functionality I already have.
Another question I have has anyone tried it with their Apple TV? If so, are there any lip sync issues? When stereo comes out these would be a nice solution in my office instead of a sound bar.
Thanks

Does anyone know if the HomePod is always checking in the background for changes in environment?or does it only auto adjust its sound if it’s moved or turned off and on again?

I've got an Echo as well. If you prefer radio and audible books then that may be a better solution for you. For me the echo doesn't work at all, other than simply a bluetooth speaker that I can say to connect to my phone.
But yes, other that airplay there is currently no other way of doing that.
