Thanks for the info guys!

As adding a CDP isn't going to improve the sound, then I'll hang on until we move and look at a new setup possibly, or keep a few components and upgrade a few.

Cheers!

I think adding a CD player will improve the sound. Anything sturdy with coax out should do. Arcam alpha 7se makes a great transport. Not sure the SE adds much as a transport.

Well I guess I'll find out for myself if a decent CDP sounds better in my set up.
Just scored a Marantz CD6004 for £25 in a charity shop//static.avforums.com/styles/avf/smilies/clap.gif

Very good price but it's not really high end. Does it have coax digital out?

gibbsy Publish time 28-11-2019 02:47:56

The 6004 is the grand pappy of the 6006 which is universally accepted as the best CDP in it's price range, so at £25, providing it's in good working order, that's something of a bargain. It has the same DAC as the 6006 and the more expensive sa8005. Just check out the prices on evil bay.

True it's not high end, but at what price do you call players high end. I've just ordered a Denon DCD 2500NE player that can cost you anything up to £1800. The OP's got a real bargain, well done to him.

In answer to your question it has both optical and digital out, same as the 6006.

Thanks @gibbsy data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
Well it's fired up ok at least! I'm going to get the mrs to play a disc or 3 via this and the Sony X700 and do a blind test so there's no placebo effect to my listening.
I'd really like there to be a difference, but we'll see shortly!

Check out the headphone socket as well, it's not particularly powerful, 24mw I think, so if you have headphones under 100 ohms you'll be surprised at how good it actually is.

ATH-M50X come in at 38ohms apparently, not audiophile headphones, but I'll definitely give them a try with it, cheers!

Blimey. Assuming you haven’t bought a lemon, that’s a great bargain.

Well, they even gave me a 14 day warranty, so no risk really!data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
