Sadly you are probably correct in that they have faked the OS. It happens quite a lot with that type of phone.
Take a look at this tool

When you have downloaded it
you then have to unzip it
It will ask for a password
this is the password: mtkflashtool.com

I downloaded it an ran it fine.
I unzipped it
then went to the folder where it was unzipped and clicked
MTkdroidTools.exe
The program opened

But you don't know the name for your phone manufacturer and I have looked at all that stuff and didn't find any MTK6595 stuff which is your phone's cpu.
So sadly all roads lead to nowhere
