I have a 1080 but still run tex as lowest .. foliage lowest and a few others lowest . . means you can see buggers in the grass instead of seeing pretty grass.
Draw distance to ultra of course.

Also how is the performance. I have 1080 also. I've read comments on Steam that FPS is crap, even on high end machines.
The game is poorly optimized, as it is still in Alpha and hasn't had many optimization passes, that is why you see videos with low textures etc.The game is also very much CPU bound at present, and that can also limit performance.Best bet it to wait for further development if you want the shiny graphics option data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7
NO need to play lowest foilage settings anymore as they patched the advantage this gave. I also have a GTX1080 but play it on high most things except shadows. Get about 60-70fps at 3440x1440.
Really enjoying it in duo play. Single is just so hit and miss in terms of doing well. Been in 10 top 10 loads but never got my chicken.
The game is very good fun, even if I'm rubbish at it.
Some very funny videos out there too, this is my fav.
What I'm not a big fan of is people having the free view option (Alt mouse) in/around buildings - allows most people just use that to see what is around a corner/wall, which takes away some of the strategic element, when you carefully hide to ambush someone and without every eye balling you they already know exactly where you are.

What are the mechanics of it though? I have a list of steam friends on the game's UI but they are always showing as offline, even when steam says they are playing the game.

#4 is my best rank so far.I've found the best tactic to scavenge for kit, get a vehicle and aim for the centre of the zone, ignoring everything (pretty much) unless I see movement.
I had a bit of a love/hate relationship with DayZ but this may pique my interest in the genre again.
