I own both consoles but I prefer the Xbox one for the following.
Great community
Best controller by a long shot
Backwards compatibility
Quieter in my opinion

Buy one of them cheap / 2nd hand, play the exclusives, then consider selling and trying the other.
I enjoyed Forza / Horizons on Xbox One, then sold as multiplatforms are generally slightly better on PS4, enjoyed Driveclub and Uncharted, now looking forward to PSVR.
(Nothing "wrong" with PC gaming, but sometimes you want to play, not tweak settings - I always wonder if I could be making it prettier... no smoother... no prettier... no it's chugging now... better fps.... actually I need a new gfx card.. ooh shiny... oh, I was going to spend tonight gaming, not browsing Scan's website!)

Personally I wouldn't spend my money on consoles, just get a PC.
That aside though, if I had to choose I'd go with PS4; That is however personally preference with the exclusives that Sony have currently grabbed up; Wait until the more "Elite" versions of each console comes out and then nab up the old ones.

Based on my experience with both current generation of Consoles...
Xbox:
Has the better online community
Quieter when running
Doesn't get as hot
Controller is easier to use
Backwards Compatibility
Game installs can take HOURS
PS4:
Has more good exclusives
Menu system runs a lot smoother
Controller feels a lot more solid
Can run Spotify in the background
Sharing content to social media is easier
Can let you play before 100% installed
People tend to make a big point of the graphic differences between them... I personally have never really noticed much (if looking at the same game on both consoles) BUT according to exclusive games, I think the PS4 has better graphics in them although recently released Forza Horizon 3 on Xbox challenges this.
I have always been on Xbox, but purchased a PS4 this year purely to play their exclusives on.

Forgot to mention that both consoles involve downloading the games to console from disc before playing them...
Xbox seems to take a LOT longer (sometimes a few hours) compared to PS4 and PS4 is more likely to let you play before its at 100%
Will add this to the above post

Thats due to it installing updates before the disc, PS4 installs the update after the disc.
To install discs quicker on Xbox you just decline the update and let it update later on.
It's a stupid quirk of the Xbox Install though.
