Relatively recently got into red wine with meals.
Can drink bottles of the stuff and wake up in the morning fresh as a daisy, where lager or white wine would have me feeling ropey.
No expert though.
I don't know any names of wines, or take notes.
I just tend to go look for Chilean reds on a wine list, they never let me down.

I detest water, can't stand it.
I'm convinced that if I were stranded in a desert for two weeks and the rescuers offered me water, I'd say "don't suppose you've got a can of coke?" first.

Just as an aside, do you enjoy a beer with a curry?
Alcohol should be enjoyed with food, if you just drink alcohol as units with no food supplement, its more harmful to your system.
A direct answer to your question would be certainly not, wine enhances a meal, but you can mismatch foods and alcohol where they don't compliment each other.

Always drink before before a curry
I never drink whilst eating, not even water as it spoils the flavour of the food

Perhaps you're treating the wine like it's part of the meal. They are going to be different, and sometimes contrasting tastes, but that's the whole point.
When I eat indian food, I always have a sharp dry white. The contrast in tastes significantly enhances the enjoyment of both. I find the high key acidity of a dry white prepares the palette perfectly for the dissemination of the rich flavours found in an indian dish, significantly increasing the perceived depth of taste.
This is particularly evident in the classic combination of a bottle of £3.99 Blossom Hill and a £2.19 Morrisons microwave Tikka Masala.

Yes. I think if you enjoy a hot curry, then a beer does nothing to ruin the taste.

i don't think wine really goes with chicken pie and chips data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 i prefer a pint of coke!
in seriousness though, i've never been a fan of wine, i've drank a few bottles recently, mostly in part to the fact they were a gift for someone who i then fell out with so i had them hanging round my house for ages.. i find i can put up with the taste, but i wouldn't say i like it.

Same here.
Now, I bring back a supply of rosé from the Provence every year when we go there.
The stuff they sell over here is worthless, has nothing to do with a real Provence rosé.

I rarely drink alcohol with a meal with the exception of red wine with a good steak.
I don't get the beer with a curry thing either (unless out for a **** up).
