Milk is fine out of date. Smell it, if it's ok it's ok.You'll know if it's not ok.
Buy less food.

I feed out of date food to my guests - they haven't died / complained yet

Yeah I think like most people we buy more than we need and some foods do not last that long. I never seem to finish hummus before it goes off.
Had to use some gaviscon once for severe heartburn.
The wife was mortified when she found out,turned out the bottle had sat with the seal broken in the fridge for at least 3 years after the expiry date.
Tasted rotten but sorted the heartburn though.
Also, having a very poor sense of smell i have had some ropey experiences with dodgy meat over the years....the look on the wife's face when she arrives home ,sniffs the air and asks wtf have you been eating ?
Actually, it may well cure you.
Perhaps the OP should try it - might clear up the verbal diarrhoea.

Nobody would eat out of date food if they had a choice. Simple. For many reasons, people do.
Personally I make a judgement. More often than not eat food at the brink of it's 'sell by' date. And beyond by a small margin.
I once pulled out some mayonnaise from my mothers fridge and to my horror found it to be past it's sell by date by five years. I kid you not! But she is not mentally 100% although lives alone and unsupported (go figure).
I did once poison myself with a rusty can of sausage rolls and a gas oven. Salmonella poisoning and in hospital. However, I only tasted a tiny corner and gave the rest to the dogs who were fine!
So make of that what you will.
Yes, because quite often its a best before date rather than an "eat after this date and it will kill you" date.

I do tend to agree with you. But that comes under the heading of making a judgement. What I don't do is slavishly chuck stuff, on the basis of a date on the side of the packaging.
People are losing the confidence to make that judgement.
