Agreed, it's a balancing act.

It makes no sense, markets don't like uncertainty, right! The leavers never expected Cameron to quit so soon after this result. Imodium, lotsbeing swallowed this weekend amongst any Tory MP remotely seen as a candidate.

It was attempt by Tory leavers to force Cameron to carry the poisonous task of EU exit negotiation. Little boys and matches.

Ah, the poisoned chalice argument.
An interesting viewpoint.

You'd have to believe that it will fail massively though, so why back it in the first place?

Just announced a new Tory leader will be in place by 2 Sept !
Good... lets get it over with so we can concentrate on the EU

That is still too long away.

October 13th General Election is the unofficial 1922 committee plan -
John Rentoul on Twitter

Again too far away. The EU Memberstates will be pushing for Article 50 to be invoked as quickly as possible. Plus the Markets will probably get spooked by the potential results of an election.

Of course you require 66% of MP's to vote to dissolve Parliament under the fixed term parliaments act and Labour may well not play ball, nor the other parties as the election coffers are empty.

They should have.... It seemed obvious to me. He was hardly going to announce prior to the vote that in the event of a Leave result he would then quit. If he had even more would have voted leave,, obviously?

IronGiant Publish time 26-11-2019 03:19:52

It's still highly suspect that if he hadn't "got his way" at the EU he was going to lead us out triumphantly, but now he hasn't got his way at home and been asked to do just that, he's suddenly got cold feet.
