We. Two of the only people in history to think Britain played their hand wrong in WW2.

It's before the "in" that was questioned data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Sorry everyone but the "we've" was in reference to the point that without hindsight (which as Alan pointed out is a wonderful thing) the justification had got around to might have, pointless going on from there as there is a near infinite amount of possibilities unless what might possibly happen is justification for anybodies actions.....

So I'm not allowed to question events in history?

Not allowed to offer or explore alternative options that could have been taken by Britain?

I still question if we (please excuse the use of the word 'we') were 'right' in declaring war on Germany in 1939.

What I should have done was not respond to @logiclee's post #85 - just stayed quiet on an open forum.

But then hindsight is a wonderful thing.

When you read books like this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/DAY-Through-German-Eyes-Hidden/dp/1539586391/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1530616452&sr=8-1&keywords=d day german eyes

which are recordings of actual accounts of ordinary German soldiers recorded after the end of the war there are some very interesting common themes.

That Hitler wanted a Unified Europe and they were defending that against the capitalist Americans and communist Russians.

That they did not understand why Britain did not want to be part of the Unified Europe and considered us traitors for siding with the US and Russians.

Clearly there was a lot of propaganda brainwashing going on but reading these reports it really was a commonly held view.

Cheers,

Nigel

The narrative changed by the month.

The 'commonly held view' was whatever Hitler wanted it to be. The Russians were the Nazi's allies one year and enemies the next.

You're correct though that the Germans and British were natural allies. Had the Nazis not come to power I'm sure we would have been.

...but a misogynist and outdated way hence why it has been rejected by Finland. Thankfully we are also going the other way and females will soon serve in the Royal Marines.
