I read the gunslinger years ago and wasn't impressed, but as I'm a King fan and heard that the first was the worst, I went out and bought all 7.Not picked them up once, but The Gunslinger is going to be the next one I read data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 (again)

I think the first book is a lot more enjoyable once you have read the entire series and started again at book 1, well it was for me anyway. As someone who had read through them all 3 times now I cant help but envy those of you who are just starting out at book 1.

I know exactly who you're referring to, there was also some other 'things' introduced in that book which made me not open the 6th or 7th.
It's Stephen King's biggest downfall in my eyes, he is an amazing writer... for two thirds of a story, then he always goes and messes it up by rushing through the last part. In my eyes he should have stopped at the end of the 4th book and just left us all wondering.
At the end of the day it took him what, 20 years to write the first 4 books? Then after his car accident it took him a year or so to write the last 3? *spits* I think he was just too desperate to end the series and finally finish off the story.
It took a while for me to get into the first book, Dave be prepared to have to slog it out for a wee bit as it is a bit of a slow starter, once you get past the first wee bit it picks up and the ending had me hooked to discover more about the characters. I thought the second book opened up some great ideas and I loved the paradox created in the third book. I liked the fourth for the most part, again it could be a bit of a slog in bits but I really do wish I'd never opened the pages of the 5th.
I'll spoiler the two bits that I really objected to, I would NOT advise having a sneak peek at this to anyone unless you've already read the books and know the stories. **I REALLY MEAN IT**
SPOILER: /End SPOILER
The first 4 books are a thing of beauty in my eyes and I lost myself in the world created in a big way when I was growing up, it just saddened me I couldn't continue to be in that world.I hated the introduction of Father Callahan, there is no way that a fictional character should have been transported to the world, especially when he starts reading his own bloody story... The other thing was the introduction of those stupid things from Harry Potter, these two things just destroyed my ability to be lost in Roland's world, I can suspend belief only so far and this is what I class as SK 'doing a Stephen King'...

Almost finished book four which I think is the best of the series so far and can almost be read as a stand alone novel. Unfortunately it does mean that I'll need to make a decision on if I should carry on with the rest of the series pretty soon.

I quite enjoyed book one but luckily it's pretty short if you don't like it.
