As someone alluded to above, book 1 isn't as good as the subsequent volumes (IMO). Stick with it though, cos it gets really good after that!

Not sure you can class them alongside LOTR. Steals a few ideas from other places in the latter books, notably the Magnificent Seven and the last couple of books feel a bit rushed which he explains in his preface.
Very good read though, answers people who say King can only write horror.

I would agree, definitely his best work, the ending wasn't what I expected....

Do you mean the comics? I got a few for christmas (series of 7?) and i've flicked through them but not my cupa tea. I notice there is a whole boat load of these comics now for the Dark Tower series... not sure if i'm missing out or not? Do they have sections that are not in the books??

I just finished reading The Gunslinger and it wasn't half bad. If the best is yet to come then I'm looking forward to reading the the rest.

I've always avoided Stephen King books, probably due to the film and TV adaptions mostly being poor, but there seem to be a lot of recommendations for the Dark Tower so I just got a copy of the Gunslinger to try. I hope I did the right thing - I chose the revised edition as it's supposed to make more continuity with the subsequent stories.

I've just finished reading the first 4 books and will take a break before completing the series. By the end of the 4th book it was becoming a bit of a chore. The first book was only about 200 pages, the second 300 odd, the 3rd 500 something and the 4th was 840pages. If I'd known the books were going to increase to that kind of page count I don't think I would have started the series.

I bought the first four books in a boxset pretty cheaply ages ago and have read the first two which I thought were pretty good. A couple of friends have said that the third is the best of the series but after that they really start to go downhill which put me off starting the third.
I will read the third and fourth books at some point though so that I can make up my own mind and then see how I feel from there.
EDIT: Actually I think it might have been the fourth that they said was best.

Took the plunge and started reading the third book yesterday which I'm enjoying so far but the "" thing seems a little silly.thinking cap
