I really enjoyed the Danny Black novels (and also the new strike back books) but would recommend you start from book one

I always used to prefer Mcnab over the years but of late Ryan seems to have written with more consistency and quality

Meant to update regards the Ben Hope books
As mentioned before I like to read series as per the correct chronology so started with the first Ben Hope book and whilst it (like so many other books of its genre) didn’t offer a huge amount that was new, I did enjoy it enough to read the second and the third books and whilst doing so picked up nearly all the rest of them cheap on kindle

However this week I started the 4th book, the heretics treasure and it became a member of a rather small list (but one that seems to be growing quicker of late) of books I just had to give up on

The “love triangle” really put me off.It was terribly written. This guy who has been set out to have a good moral compass and who has not long lost the love of his love and used this to change his life and gain focus ends up bedding the young wife of a guy to who Ben literally owes his life to.

It was terribly written (although not quite so bad as the women getting on the boat at the beginning) and I just had to give up and turn my back on the series

I’ve just started the 3rd Spider Shephed novel, first two have been rather generic but enjoyable easy reads. Also have lined up the 2nd grey man book (although first was not brilliant) and am aiming to read patriot games in an attempt to re read all of clancys books

If you given up on Ben because you did not like one I jump a few stories I started with The Armada Legacy which got me into the series and the following book doesn't let up one it starts going although its almost like a Bond. I also very much liked the next The Forgotten Holocaust although a fair bit of it is reading through old letters during the time of the Irish potato famine, and found interesting what was going on.
I thought all three metionsd were better than the 2 early ones I just got though so far.

Interesting.
I really like the “Clive Cussler” style of novel which the Ben Hope books fit with but that whole scene in the 4th book where Ben wrestles with his conscious for all of 5 seconds was just awful
It did not fit with character and did not fit with the story
To be honest I’m not a fan of sex scenes / romantic sub plots unless fully integral to the story and this just put me off

Are the romantic sub plots as obvious / bad in the later books ?

You mention Bond and that’s who the bedding of the friends wife bit reminded me of.Not essential at all and no need for it. By all means go out and save the world and I’ve no issue with the hero getting his end away, I’m just not wanting to read about it

I can't remeber him bedding anyone from the books I read onwards of the one I mentioned As to the Bond comment I meant in some there global implications. There is talk of him getting married but I leave you to find what goes on with that.

Has any one read any J.B. Turner books which sound like a bit like Reacher stories but one of the bad reviews put me of.
Quote: A literate eleven year old with access to an extensive lexicon of expletives and obscenities could have written this.

I know I bleat on about it loads but I really am sick and tired of these “move over Jack Reacher ............ is in town” books

I used to love the days when a new book launch was a thing. Now it seems anyone with an amazon account and a keyboard can get a book out and then by giving it away free get loads of half decent reviews.

I would not be surprised if half these books really are just mass generated by some AI machine

I think they have been mentioned previously but I'm working my way through the Cotton Malone series by Steve Berry at the moment and really enjoying them. Usually based on re-enearthing of a legendary story i.e Charlemagne, Knights Templar, Nazi treasure etc but pretty well written, well paced and with a decent amount of true historical fact (which the author expands on in the notes at the end). A lot more substance than the Reacher books and well worth a look, in my opinion.

I bought a load when they were on Kindle cheap but only read the first one which I was disappointed with, monks armed to the teeth like you expect white supremist, going in for medieval torture. I also found the pace very slow, although more going on than in the second of Lee Child books I read.
