Just finished the count of Monte cristo. Very good book, thanks for the recommendation. I want to watch a good film adaptation now but there's loads to choose from.

Moved on to Mr Mercedes by Stephen King now

Sometimes I think "It's not fair, there will always be books I want to read."
Then I think "Great, there will always be books I want to read."

None are very good after reading the book, your far better looking at the TV series they have done on them, still not perfect but a lot closer

The best book I've ever read is The Colour Purple by Alice Walker. I read it as a teenager and still read it at least once a year because it's incredibly moving and beautifully written. Alice Walker is a great author and all of her books are well worth reading.

I can see someone mentioned The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - another great book. Takes a while to get through the whole series but it's definitely worth it!

Quite a few of my favourites have already been mentioned (e.g. Iain Banks); I'd have to have a look at my bookshelves at home to pick out many more (in passing, I'll just quickly mention Douglas Adams, David Gemmell and Stephen Donaldson). Most of my favourites are probably from my teens and twenties, but a more recent series that's still going strong is the Chronicles of St Mary's, by Jodie Taylor, beginning with Just One Damned Thing After Another. These are fabulous stories mixing time travel and history, and they are a lot of fun.

need a book for taking on holiday, was looking at 'the stand' there, but think that will be a bit much! anything a bit shorter out of these folk could recommend?

Enders game is short (around 200 pages) and in my top 3 books of all time.

Just depends whether you can accept a child being vastly smarter than an adult, if you can it's excellent, if you can't then avoid
