According to BMW my car's top speed is 149mph, but I don't see myself at this speed even if it's legal as it only takes something small to go wrong and cause a bad accident.

Good question.
On motorways I think speed differential is more important than absolute speed.
I would probably drive at the same speed as everybody else.

Texas has limits as high as 85 mph. What's tolerated varies from state to state. As an example, driving the toll road from Chicago eastwards into Indiana, in Illinois everybody's doing 15 over, cross the state line into Indiana & they're all sticking rigidly to the speed limit.

Lucky to do 50 on most motorways up my way unless late at night or really early mornings

In my experience this is often the case.Lorries seem to hate being forced to keep the to the speed limit if it is below 60.They just like intimidating you to go faster.

I would be OK for a max of 90 and would happily sit at 80 all day in good weather.

Got back from a road trip to Kent today. M3, M25, M26, M20, M2. There are certain sections where it's not comfortable/advisable to do 80mphdue to the road surface. Other parts I would quite happily put my foot down and do 120.

I think this is because of a lack of road training in the U.K.People think there is such a thing as a ‘fast lane’ and don’t understand they’re supposed to keep left unless overtaking. I don’t know why this isn’t taught more.

Because until very recently, learner drivers weren’t allowed on the motorway until they had passed their test. Which unfortunately is the day they stop their driving lessons.

I'd do what I currently do (live up north so roads quieter data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7 ) and between 80-90mph..
