data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7I would definitely use the handbrake when parking on a slope, and leave it in gear.

leaving the car in gear with handbrake on isn't going to help if the car is sliding on ice, it will only help if the wheels are actually turning, in which case this could happen at any time of the year.
Possible that if you got the brakes very hot and applied the handbrake as the brakes cooled it would release, but I would have thought you'd need to get the brakes very hot to achieve this.

Citroen BX's were very prone to this "feature" but as you say it's unlikely to be the case here.I quite agree about your slipping on ice comment, I was just surprised that someone wouldn't bother with the handbrake on a slope, regardless of the weather.

Why only two? Be very, very careful if you're only putting winter tyres on the front wheels. There is a risk that the rear will lose traction unpredictably and suddenly when turning and braking.
It might save you a few quid for the cost of the tyres, but at what risk?

Agreed, even with an auto I apply handbrake on a slope.
I do remember Citreons having problems - Xanitas suffered too. They had the handbrake on the front if I recall, due to the hydraulic suspension on the rear. As front brakes work harder this puts them more at risk of the cooling problem.

Sorry if I'm reopening old discussions, I haven't been a member that long and must have missed them.
For what it's worth my only lines on it then are that your tyres are the only thing keeping you on the road... Why would you take the risk and potentially compromise your and others safety for the sake of a few quid?

All season tyres. Because of Christmas funds are tight. But I have spotted a 'buy now pay in six months' option on the Blackcircles site. We can buy two now and not worry about it, any more and the kids will have to do without something. We may get all four and put the money in the bank for now, then settle the bill in February.
