Should of said for cars, for agriculture & some commercial use there is not really a viable alternative yet.
To sell it as a greener alternative was always a lie.

So now we know why the consumption figures are always way off the real world.

I used to have that attitude until my wife started to suffer from Asthma in her late 50's probably due to the Wonderfull London air.
When working as a diesel mechanic in my youth It also caused me bad skin problems, never liked it.

According to the news, turning off the emission controls improves the mpg (which is kind of weird if you think about it)

Maybe 11 million vehicles potentially affected, but that doesn't mean every government is going to act upon it.
So it doesn't necessarily mean VW will have to 'fix' 11 million cars.

No idea how many they will fix. They're setting aside five billion quid to resolve it.

so what are we theoretically saying if a recall were to happen , what effect would it have on the car's performance and MPG etc I wonder?

I can't even imagine what 'fix' can be expected, really.
I suppose an ECU flash to match the settings used in the tests?
Which will probably ruin driveability.
Like running an old carburettor car/bike on far too lean a setting.
