New tyres - Fitter has 'Interesting' Theory

Well, car passed MOT. However it was pointed out that rear tyres only have 2 - 3mm of tread on them. After much heated debate with the Mrs (me "I always change them when they get to 2mm", her "They are legal, let's leave it a while") I have it booked in for two new tyres to be fitted on Friday.

Thing is, we got the front ones fitted January this year. Would putting the new ones on the front and moving the 'old' ones to the rear be worthwhile? They have only had 4 - 5 months of wear.

It may be a moot point as the fitter seems to have little interest in switching them over "You'll have all kinds of handling problems. Just get the new ones fitted to the back".

Whatever happened to getting new tyres fitted on the front and moving the front ones to the rear?

Here we go again...data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

But in your particular given circumstances with very few miles on the front, I wouldn't bother.

If you'd had them much longer I'd see the point but they surely can't have worn much yet.

Thanks guys. Bit odd though that the fitter didn't know how long they had been on. I got a strong vibe that he just couldn't be arsed to rotate them.

He's been a lazy bastard.

Well, now you put it like that I tend to agree data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

I can't imagine we have worn much off the fronts but I'll think twice before going back to this place. I'll use another Blackcircles affiliate instead.

Measure them. New ones are what, 8mm? Driven wheels I assume. Within a shade of the new tyre then I would leave it. If there are lead inserts in the drivers boot then depends.

Garages I have used have always just done it. Saves a bit.

Service paperwork yesterday said they were 7mm. I may quiz them again when I drop it off though.

I have a small gauge in the glove boxes. Check it against a ruler as it can be the difference between points and no points, driver is responsible for the state of the car when driving off. A mirror comes in very handy for checking the inside of the tyre but I don't cary that of the makeup would look odd........
1mm? sucks air in over teeth....... your shout. I would.

I start shopping at 3mm and usually get them done soon after. More than points at risk. What is it now, 2 grand (top end of the fine) a corner and 3 points each?

Where did 1mm come from?
