I can never understand that. Surely A3 as a plate must be worth more than his car. Wouldn't it be better to have an R8 with ** 60 *** on it? I know which way my money would go.

FWIW, I've seen mid-range Ford Escort-calibre cars with things like "TM 2", "H 45" etc. I assume they're using that car to hold the plate whilst they're 'inbetween' better vehicles, IYSWIM, rather than suffer the embarrassment of sporting a normal everyman-style plate and, you know, looking like riff-raff...

Yes, that will be the case.
A mate of mine has two old mopeds with private plates on.
Cheaper to do it that way than to pay the yearly retention fees.

If it was just 'A3', that must have cost a mint.
Dunlop used to own 'A1' and had it on an ancient estate car they used at race meetings.
Word is they turned down tens of thousands of pounds for it.
Last I heard, the plate had disappeared off the map a bit.

The thing I've never understood is what happens to the old reg number of the vehicle when you put personalised plates on. Do you keep the old reg plates and then put them back on when you sell the car?

9 times out of 10, you are re-allocated the original number.
Not guaranteed though.
I've yet to experiences a case when it hasn't happened though.
In which case, you keep the original plates and whack them back on.data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Yep, this has been my experience in the 3 times i have transferred my number so far.
I am planning to change again in the next month or 2, so i have the original plates ready to go back on.
I hadnt realised this is what happens, so binned my original plates when i first bought my own number, then had to get them made up again when i was selling the car. data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7

Still owned by Dunlop?

Ron240 Publish time 24-11-2019 22:42:51

I agree.
Have just checked and it is simply A3 as stated.
Its on a blue 2 litre diesel Audi first registered 17/7/07, so the plate will be worth considerably more than the car.
