How would you rebuild society after humanity is sent back to the stone age? This question forms the basis of Dr. Stone's narrative, which is set over 3,000 years after a mysterious light turns everyone on Earth into stone. Science is the series' answer to this question. This show follows Senku, a High School student and the first to depetrify, as he tries to rebuild civilization and revive every person he can using modern science. This series acts like an edutainment series with the goal of using real world science to craft an interesting story.
Dr. Stone is an anime that centers around science and applying it to a world that has reverted to a prehistoric time. The goal of the main character, Senku, is to try and revive every person that was petrified over 3,000 years ago, and to rebuild civilization. The plan to reach this goal is to manufacture enough Nitol, an etching solution made from Nitric Acid, to release each individual from the petrification. The series also demonstrates and describes many different things that can be done with science, such as creating antibiotics to cure bacterial infections. It also helps that the show is just really entertaining, with many different unique and entertaining characters that are introduced throughout the series' run.
This series has a great execution of its concepts, with only some certain flaws here or there. Slight spoilers, the biggest two flaws of this series are the chemical formulas being too efficient, and the main villain being sub par. The problem with the series' chemistry is that the formulas seem to work at a near 100% efficiency, which shouldn't be possible with the technology they have available, though it makes sense from a writing perspective sense it makes the narrative flow better. The second major problem is the villain, whose goal is to kill Senku to prevent him from reviving people who were corrupt, and to stop the advancement of science because he believes the modern world was corrupt. The problem with the writing of said villain is that they feel less like a believable villain than they could be, though the show has time to delve deeper into their philosophy and mindset. Other than that there aren't many other issues with this show, other than small nitpicks.
This show is easily a 10/10, and probably my favorite thing to be released within the last year. You can watch it on Toonami, or Crunchyroll, or even buy a digital or physical version online, I got my version for around $35, but you can get it for far less if you are just streaming the show. This is a great show for fans of the Isekai genre or Science, and is aimed at young adults. Polygon's review refers to it as "An Isekai anime that struggles to sell us on reality", which is a statement that I couldn't agree more with. Lastely, the anime just recently finished its first season and a second one is scheduled to be released later this year, making now a great time to pick it up.
