It is not "Grease", not "The Sound of Music", not even "Cabaret". Its songs are not that catchy, its plot is not that clear. The characters, in fact, are not all well-defined, except that of Day-Lewis and, perhaps, Marion Cotillard's. However this, I really enjoyed this movie. Before watching it, I had read so many negative reviews that I could hardly expect anything good. I was told it was plot less, ridiculous, incoherent. Well, it deals with a man and his frustrations for his lack of inspiration. His mind, his inner feelings are excellently portrayed in the film. This psychological aspect is probably what makes the movie so unattainable to some viewers, apart from the fact that it is based upon another film. Comparisons are never fair. This is 2010 and a movie should be rated for itself, not by where it stands with respect to others. This one is about the inner feelings of a single, central character who, as I saw it, shows us his women and what they mean to him by means of their musical numbers. It is all very stream-of-consciousness and, consequently, by no means easy to absorb. This is why the character of Guido is so well-constructed... the whole movie, all the characters are focused on his figure. Cruz's acting, as usual, I did not actually understand, and Nicole Kidman or Hudson's appearances do not do much for the movie, but help us understand Guido's character. Fergie's "Be Italian", Marion Cotillard's beauty and expressiveness, Judi Dench's lines and Day-Lewis make up for the previously mentioned flaws, though.
Thus, if you feel like watching a musical, watch "Chicago". Watch "Cabaret". Watch "My Fair Lady". Watch any of the classical ones. If you feel like watching an original musical, watch "Nine". A different concept of musical. One that I absolutely enjoyed and deserves attention, that is for sure.
