How robust are laser-tracking devices in transit?

I've had a few deliveries lately with damaged contents. More than usual given the time of year (early December, high volume and 'seasonal' staff).

I'd really like to buy a CD player and Blu-Ray right now, but the damage I'm seeing is putting me off, principally because of possible damage to the laser tracking mechanism (I am doubting PCB's can be damaged and chassis damage would be visible). Plus with my lack of experience I'd not know if the players were not working 100% right.

So I guess I'm asking is the laser mechanism easily damaged in transit, and if it was, would I know for sure because even a small amount of damage would render the player unusable (maybe being digital it is either 'on' or 'off')?

Surely wherever you buy one from it would have been transported somewhere down the line?

Unless you collect straight from the factory then I can’t think of how you can avoid risk of damage.

They are very robust these days and the packing will be designed to take a few knocks.

I think you can be reasonably assured it will arrive undamaged - provided the packing and casework all looks good.

Of course I realise items must be shipped from the factory and the longer something is in transit the more likely it is to be damaged, particularly now with a more hectic schedule and Seasonal staff. Having worked in Distribution and Warehousing...wow..things get thrown around for 'fun' and when volume is high, like now, duty of care goes out the window esp with Seasonal Staff.

Let me tell you I have recently had: an item with only one pin of a three pin electrical plug intact; a microwave that had its body so twisted it didn't sit straight on the counter, while dropping black dust from inside (internally damaged); and one cracked bottle of bourbon. I don't normally get things damaged to such degrees. And today the Courier didn't even have the time to knock on the door. Just stuffed the delivery in an outside bin and left a note.

So its a bad time and will be for at least several weeks.

Cheers. Any ideas about the Unit working 100% or 0% because it is dealing with digital information if it had been bashed a little too much?
