So, I recently visited my wife's grandparents in Florida. In addition to generally poor vision and hearing, her Grandfather also suffers from macular degeneration. If you're unfamiliar with it, as I was, the portion of his eye that actually provides detail to the things he looks at is essentially missing pixels. That's probably a poor description, but it sort of gets the idea across. As he attempts to read words, especially longer ones, letters from the word disappear and reappear as his eye moves across it.
While we were there, I tried a few different things to see if there was something that could help him and what worked out the absolute best was mirror-casting a phone onto a T.V. The phone itself, even magnified, didn't work - it had to be projected onto the T.V. While it would be nice if that was the end and solution, here's the problem. He can't really use a cell phone. Everything on it is too small, and he just doesn't care for them or really see a need to have one. Additionally, all of their devices - laptop, Grandma's cellphone, tablet - are Apple. Their T.V.s are not. This make casting with what they already have a non-viable solution.
Here's what I'm trying to work out - I'm trying to find a handheld digital viewer/magnifier/etc. that supports wireless mirroring. I have found some that are close, but generally have some sort of RCA plug-in option. I'm down to Frankenstein something together, such as a digital viewer with RCA plug-in connected to an RCA mirror-cast transmitter/adapter. I could probably splice the wire down to 6" and mold it into a 3D printed shell holding the viewer and transmitter, but I'm just not finding anything that I can adapt into a solution or adapt my solution into.
If anybody has any ideas or guidance/direction, it would be appreciated. Hopefully I've expressed this well enough to relay the intent of what I am trying to accomplish. If not, a standard format that I'm familiar with is:
Task: Find/create a device that can be used to transmit video imaging to a television through wireless means.
Condition: This will be employed by a very elderly person. Assistance for initial setup can be provided, but day-to-day use will be independent.
Standard: Handheld, lightweight, and wireless. High preference to nothing more than on/off operation outside of initial setup.
Once again I appreciate any help, direction, or guidance that anyone can give. This isn't exactly an area that I would consider myself very knowledgeable in, and I worry that the very specific nature of the solution that I'm looking for almost ensures that one doesn't exist. |
