My 7 year old (8 in May) could like a tablet for Christmas.  He regularly uses mine or my wife's iPad.  Uses Minecraft, Pokermon Quest, Netflix, Amazon Prime etc.

I'm leaning towards an Amazon Fire either the standard edition or the kids addition.  (I like the warranty etc with the kids one but I think he'll think the case is a bit 'babyish'.)

Biggest issue as I see it is how locked down the Fire operating system is.  I've seen a video showing a work around to sideload Pokermon, haven't checked Minecraft - but then I don't know what's available on there anyway.

Is the Fire the one to get or are there other android tablets worth considering.  iPad is too expensive.

I’ve just bought a Lenovo E7 (direct from Lenovo) - bargain at £40 after discount and no ads etc. Slight downside is no MHL (so cannot output signal via HDMI) but otherwise is spot on for my 7 & 9 yr olds.

We’ve got two fire 7” tablets and while they are ok for basic use, I could see them really struggling for games. I’d do some in depth research first.

Cheers

I was a bit worried about that.  I've gone for an Fire 8 HD.  Slightly more ram and larger storage.  Hopefully it'll do the job.
