Here's a tip for you. We always have to have a check in bag between us as we normally take a lot of snorkelling gear which is heavy. First words out of my mouth when I get to bag drop is "are you checking hand luggage?" Reply "of course sir" in goes the the hand luggage and off we go 20kg lighter.

If there isn't a long que I would wait and ask directly!

I just took a group of three staff and three service users to Spain for a week with Thompson and they put us all together without asking.
I noticed a little bit of passengers swapping seats amongst themselves anyway so I wouldn't worry too much about paying extra.

I'm flying with Ryanair next month with my partner, checked-in online last week and chose our seats at £9 each. A bit of a cheek I thought but at least we'll be sat together with no fuss.
