We like LA Pineda in Spain for about a week to 10 days because
1) The local Airport (Reus) is very small thus stress free and 20 minutes away in a taxi
2) The place itself is very small and does not attract 18 to 30 style holiday makers
3) The flight is only 1.5 hours
4) There is an excellent water park with dolphins / seal shows that will be 5 to 10 mins walk from which ever hotel you stay (VIP tickets are worth it) - You can literally spend the day here sunbathing and pool dipping and going on the rides - It's called Aquapolis.
5) The beach will be literally 1 mins to 10 mins walk from wherever you stay
6) The weather is about as guaranteed as you can get
7) Barcelona is 1.5 hours away for a city day excursion
8) Buses are excellent if you want to travel around
9) There is a Alton Towers type theme park 20 mins bus ride away - Recommend fast track tickets - Also found may of the animal shows very good - It's called portaventura
10) The place is generally quieter than rowdy and very small - you would have seen all that there is to see in LA Pineda within 2 days.
Over the years we have stayed at
Golden Donaire - Ideal when budget counts and kids are say <8 its actually on the beach - lots of entertainment all day long and evening, although we would not stop there now because we are not a young family anymore
Hotel Terramarina - Ideal for mid budget and kids are say 10 as it's also right on the beech and, plenty of entertainment around the location of the hotel on an evening in bars etc. This is probably the best placed of the hotels for exploring the shops / nightlife entertainment. For example if you walked from Golden Donair to here you would be ready to walk back without really wanting to continue further to see what else there is.
Gran Pallas - 5 stars hotel not cheap, but not mind blowing expensive either, we have not stayed here yet, we have booked for June 22nd for a week. It's <5 mins from beach. Sadly our 17 year did not want to come, but, one of the loft rooms looks ideal for a couple with a teenager as you get in effect two rooms.
Each person is different, we have been 5 times in 12 years and stopped at the hotels above as our wants and budget changed but, it may or may not be ideal for you, I hope by listing what we like about this area and the overall other elements of holiday making that you are able to decide if it is or is not something along your tastes.
My preference for booking is
1) Book flights direct wth budget airline - I'm guessing your East Midlands and Jet 2 fly to Reus. Jet 2 charge more for check in luggage, you ignite find with 3 of you that you can mange with just 2 check in luggage and then hand baggage.
2) Book hotel via Expedia (use quidco)
3) Book transfers, airport parking, lounge pass, fast track security via the airlines website - If budget is tight and you are ok with buses it is apparently easy to get a bus from Reus to La-Pineda - Although private taxi pre-booked via Jet 2 site both ways only cost £56.
Hope this helps
